When Penguin created their original affordable paperback in 1935 they published the covers in a series of colours. Dark Blue for Biography, Orange for Classic Fiction, Mauve for Essays and Belles Lettres, Green for Mystery & Crime, Red for Plays, Magenta for Travel & Adventure...and finally, Yellow for Miscellaneous for anything which didn't fit the other categories.

In addition they published an Arts & Science series called Pelicans. which were light blue and featured a Pelican logo.
